There are different kinds of cognitive behavioral therapy and this includes rational behavior therapy, cognitive therapy, rational emotive behavioral therapy, dialectic behavior therapy and cognitive therapy.
Characteristics of cognitive behavioral therapy or counseling
Cognitive behavioral therapy is based on the emotional response by the patient during the start of treatment. This kind of treatment is based on what scientists believe that our feelings and behaviors are manipulated by our thoughts, rather than external things such as situations, people and events. With this in mind, we can change our thoughts into something that could make us feel better even if we are still in the same situation.
Cognitive behavioral therapy or counseling is suitable for patients suffering from tinnitus noise because the treatment is done for a shorter period of time and usually limited. Positive results can be observed in no time compared to psychoanalysis, which usually takes years to get results from. Patients are told in advance that the treatment will come to an end and both the therapist and client decide on how long the process will be.
A positive relationship between the two is also ensured for the treatment to take into effect quickly. Therapists believe that it is very essential for them to have a trusting and good relationship with their patients however, they still firmly believe that the latter gets better because they learn to think in different perspectives and act on what they learned. In short, cognitive behavioral therapy or counseling focuses on the patients self counseling skills.
The goals of the patients are very important and therapists make sure that their clients achieve their goals. The role of the therapist is to listen, encourage and teach their patients whose role is to learn, express their concerns and implement what they have learned.
Tinnitus noise can be treated if the therapist and patient are both trying to reach their goals of eliminating the annoying and stressful ringing sounds coming the patient is suffering from. Therapists understand their clients through the Socratic method and this is the reason why they ask questions most of the time. Patients are also encouraged to ask questions to know the answers.
Cognitive behavioral therapy or counseling have specific agendas per session, where specific techniques and concepts are taught to the patients. Clients are the ones who specify their goals and therapists are only there to help them reach it. Everything included in the therapy is directed towards the clients goals by helping the patients learn how to think and act in order to get what they have always wanted (in this case, getting rid of their tinnitus noise. Everything is not about what to do but rather, on how things should be done.
